It was a five hour fight but the Google ads are now working. I tried so many things in the end that I am not sure what it was that did the trick. I ended up installing a database manager into the webhosting platform and messing with the user privelidges (I was s**ting myself but there were lots of articles around the web explaining how). I have such a feeling of acomplishment right now as I lie in bed writing this on my Samsung Windows handheld.
