Drifting is the latest art challenge from Illustration Friday, so here’s my art.

This is the raw trueSpace render which I later worked on to produce the Grey Angel, one of the many spaceship designs I have produced for science fiction RPGs. The final version of this spaceship has a lot more detail, but this raw render from the 3D mesh has a haunting quality which really speaks to this week’s challenge word – drifting. The spaceship has empty staring windows and there are no lights, but at the same time it has the smooth appearance of a powerful, ultra high-tech spaceship adrift in the void. It begs the question; what happened?

As an illustrator for SF RPGs I often work in both 3D and 2D techniques to produce a wide range of fantasy illustrations including monsters, spaceships and robots. I particularly enjoy creating robots as it is almost a sculptural abstract process. I feel a little like Henry Moor.

I also create a lot of other illustrations as well and have recently been spending a lot of time creating animations. I am currently struggling with creating the early stages of a 3D animation using the free open source 3D illustration and animation tool called Blender. I’m a big fan of blender and would heartily recommend it – it’s free – even if it does sometimes refuse to be intuitive an even makes me want to pull my hair out.

These animations don’t have a lot to do with my usual RPG obsessions, but they are a lot cuter and a lot more fun.

I love the mystery associated with this ship. Reminds me of something out of a Babylon 5 episode. The background is beautiful. I just love this illustration.
