Ubuntu has lots of Blender fonts

I’m redesigning the front page of my website to make the 3D illustrations and models I create more of a feature. It’s not live yet, but hopefully it will be soon. While I was about it, I thought to myself, why don’t I produce a 3D masthead for the site. Judging my idea to be good after a few preliminary sketches on some printer paper, I opened Blender and created a new scene.

I did my usual messing about to create a 3D scene with some text and a particle system behind it to give some contrast.

The particle system looks much more impressive in the render than in the visualisation in the Blender interface of course, as you can see above. I was quite happy with my efforts, apart from one thing. I’m a little tired of the default Blender font and so I went searching for some alternatives.

While searching I came across a thread on Blender Newbies that explains how to add Ubuntu’s fonts to Blender. It seems that the fonts are hidden in quite an out of the way place. Once I had found them though a very pleasingly large number of them had the little blue square next to them that meant they could be used in Blender. As they are provided with Ubuntu I’m pretty sure they are open-content fonts too, so in the website logo they go. Now all i have to do is set up the rest of the page – and then the rest of the site – with Kompozer.
