More work on the Space Dragon, and IF

I have done more work on the Space Dragon – it has its own space dragon rpg illustration page now – and I’ve added an old picture to Illustration Friday. First the space dragon, I’ve been looking at a lot of images of lizards, to try and get a nice realistic looking space dragon. The [...]

Space dragon – a sci-fi monster for role-playing games

I’ve always been a big fan of giant space monsters, however uncool they are with real sci-fi fans, and I really enjoy painting them. Giant space monsters are very infrequently encountered in more realistic games and TV shows like Star Trek and Eclipse Phase, but they are a fun addition to a more relaxed, space [...]

More texture for torpedo spaceship

The simple spaceship I’m using for experimenting with textures is steadily improving. It’s difficult to get the lines I draw on the UV texture to look precise. They seem to end up being very pixelated and blurry. That’s OK I guess in an image that I might just use as the basis for a digital [...]

Latest 3D Spaceship gets texture

The textures I’m creating in GIMP are starting to look good. The more detail I build up in the colours and bump map the more this abstract torpedo shape is starting to look like an honest-to-goodness spaceship. I’ve changed the background of my renders from white to a nice starscape so I can better judge [...]

Yay! The UV Unwrap is Done!

OK! I finally got to the end of a UV Unwrap. This is where you take a 3D model and peel it like an orange, so you can paint on the peel (the UV unwrap) and wind it back on. Because my model is a spaceship my UV unwrap doesn’t look much like an orange [...]

Be Vewy Qwiet, I’m hunting tris, again

As usual the latest renders and the blend file for this spaceship is at the dedicated game spaceship model project page. I’m aiming for a completely triangle free model. I’ve been reading my offline ebook of theBlender documentation wiki and I discovered that it is possible to select all the triangles on your model from [...]

Tips for making a professional spaceship mesh for games gratefully received

There’s been progress on the spaceship mesh. It might not look like much, but a lot has been going on underneath. I have alerted the community at the Vega Strike forums about my intentions of doing 3D stuff, and have received a cautiously welcoming reception, and a lot of good advice. You can read the [...]

This spaceship is getting gnarly

My spaceship illustration is coming on in leaps and bounds, getting more interesting all the time. It has twice as many greebles as the last time we saw it, and of course it was almost completely smooth when I rendered the mesh in Blender.

Back to 3D spaceship art with Blender, and GIMP

I’m missing all the fun I had creating spaceships with Blender and GIMP, and I was in the mood to do another. I already have GIMP on my Ubuntu Karmic Koala system so all I needed was Blender. Clicking install packages from the menu had Blender installed and ready to go in about seven minutes, [...]

Learning how to do glass and stars in Blender

I decided to use a royalty-free picture of space as a background to the spaceship I’m designing, but as you can see (left) it turned out to be a little bit, in your face. So I decided I could put a sheet of dark glass in front of it to take the edge off [...]
