spaceship illustration tutorial
The Kadar Spaceship started as a simple sketch and ended up being a nice Photoshop tutorial.
One of the first tasks was to get rid of the white paper in the sketch and replace it with a transparent layer so that it is easier to colour the spaceship in the illustration. I did this with the background erasor. Once the white paper was gone I was left with a greyscale outline of the spaceship. I wanted a nice thick black outline around the spaceship in the finished illustration so I altered the levels of the layer with the outlines.
It's really satisfying to grab the little white arrow on the colour levels graph and pull it all the way over to the right where the black arrow is. In real time as the arrow moves the outline goes from a greyscale with every possible colour of pixel to a nice rich inky black. All the pixels either transparent or black.
With the spaceship illustration in this condition it is time to create vector shapes in various shades of grey to represent the armour plates on the spaceship with the tool that looks like a fountain pen.
