Monstrous Frogs
These frogs were designed as an illustration for a science fiction story I wrote for my site fantasticalfabulist.googlepages.com where I post my
attempts at writing stories of the rum and uncanny. The frogs are worshiped as gods in this science fiction tale but they are in fact of course
aliens. The interesting and tricky thing about designing and drawing this image was the items the frogs would be wearing. I wanted to give them
strange high tech artifacts but I also wanted these artifacts in the illustration to be easily mistaken for the sort of thing the ancient Aztecs or
Egyptians.
I therefore drew large chunky thick bands of enigmatic machinery that could just as easily be abstract patterns on ceremonial jewelery. The
Egyptian skirt on the lead frog in this science fiction monster illustration adds to this effect.
I also love the eyes of the monster frogs, their blank stare is very alien and intimidating. The pot belly of the lead frog hanging over his ancient
artifact/hight tech jewelery is another nice touch and the simplicity of the execution of the illustration adds to its effect. The image is a pen sketch
scanned into Photoshop and with a black vector shape acting as the sky/background.
