Giant Droid Spider
One of my favourite elements of science fiction is, of course, the giant robots. Now I'm not talking on this page about those giant robots, which we all love, that have a pilot riding around in their head – mechs. I'm talking about cold, calculating, emotionless droids. The sort of metal monster that will cause all kinds of problems to your team of adventurers and the smooth running of your RPG adventure, just because of a little bug in its programming.
This particular giant frightening machine is a maintenance droid – and emergency repair droid – found living on the hull of some of the larger spaceships in my sci-fi role playing game universes.
I actually painted this image quite some time ago, when I was still using Photoshop on a Windoze environment. I didn't even have a graphics tablet at the time so my workflow consisted of sketching my scene on actual paper with an old-school real pencil. Then I would scan this into Photoshop and colour in the illustration using my mouse. It was a very convoluted and long-winded way of producing illustrations suitable for a sci-fi RPG rule book, for example, but the results were actually quite good.
The image also has a signature saying that it was produced using Blender. This was a bit of an accident and in fat there are no 3D elements in the picture. I didn't start Blender up at any point in the production of this illustration, although I have used 3D models produced in Blender as the basis for quite a few illustrations with a sci-fi feel, for RPGs.
