Sad Little Elephant
This is an illustration from a children's story about a sad little elephant. The poor little lost tiny, tiny animal is wandering through the streets in the rain is being totally ignored by the people who are too busy rushing about in their busy lives to pay the amazing little creature any attention. The illustration is very dark, but at the same time very colourful with all the rain protective plastic the pedestrians are wearing. The sadness of the poor little elephant in the illustration is obvious in the little creature's eyes. He is staring down at the ripples of the rain drops as they fall on the path. The ripples in the rain washed street in the illustration catch the light thrown by unseen neon city lights, even though it outside the edges of the image, the city is a presence. You'll be glad to know that the children's picture book story has a happy ending. The poor lonely little elephant finds other tiny little animal friends who live in the cracks in the city. A kind of jungle grows there and the illustration style used to depict the jungle is entirely different to the dark painterly style used in the illustration above. The little elephant's story is a story about being lost and found. The illustrations start out colourful, go through a dark middle section and then brighten up again as the story comes to a happy ending.
